vs computer📖 Strategy guide: How to mix closer in Mix: hue first, then mud, and why five drops are not enough
How to play
The taped card shows a target paint. Tap a tube (or press 1, 2, 3) to squeeze one drop onto the palette, up to 20 drops; Undo takes back the last one, Wipe clears the palette. When your mix looks like the card, press Compare. You see both side by side, the difference as a number (ΔE, 0 is a perfect match), a closeness bar, what is off in words ("a bit too blue and a touch too dark") and the recipe that makes the target exactly. Hint gives those words before you compare, for 1 ΔE.
Daily, levels and challenges
Normal is the daily: five paints from cobalt blue, quinacridone rose and Hansa yellow, the same for everyone, new at midnight UTC. Replay it as often as you like; your best counts and stays on this device. Easy uses two tubes per paint, Hard adds titanium white and longer recipes. Your score is the five ΔE values added up, times ten: lower is better. ⚔️ sends a friend the exact five paints.
How the puzzles are made
Every target starts as a random recipe, say 3 blue and 2 yellow, so each one can be matched exactly within the drop limit. Paint mixes by a simplified Kubelka–Munk model: each tube absorbs and scatters red, green and blue light by its own amounts, a mix adds up those amounts over its drops, and the colour follows from their ratio. So blue and yellow make green, not grey. It is a three-channel model, not a measurement of real paint. Targets too close to a pure tube or to each other are thrown out. ΔE is CIEDE2000, the standard measure of how different two colours look; after each round a solver tries every recipe of up to 20 drops and shows the best.
Tips
- Only proportions matter: 2 blue and 4 yellow is the same paint as 1 and 2. Start small, then double up when you need a finer step.
- Find the hue first with two tubes, then add the third to dull it.
- Rose is the strongest tube and white the gentlest: one drop of rose too many moves a mix furthest, a drop of white the least.
